The Chained Woman

This issue of Frisson explores the image of the chained woman in art, film, and literature, from the mythical Andromeda to the infamous Xuzhou Mother of Eight Incident in rural China in 2022. From the angel in the house to the madwoman in the attic, this issue explores cases of women in Taiwan, China, England, and France who have been literally and figuratively locked up, often because they have been decreed insane, but was their madness the result of their condition or the prerequisite for it?
