The Yandere Issue

Yandere is a love interest subtype in visual novels and manga, the female love interest who is so obsessively enraptured that she kills her love object, the male lead. But she is not simply a 2D fictional creation. We trace the roots of this exaggerated figure in the high-profile crime cases of Abe Sada, a geisha who killed her lover by strangulation and then dismembered him. The issue also includes a tribute to the anarchist writer of a prison memoir, Kaneko Fumiko, on the one hundredth anniversary of her death.
